The Creator Toolkit
Eight free tools, one job each — plan, design and optimise a video without signing up for anything. This mirrors how the best free tool sites in this niche work: ytthumbtool.com pairs its downloader with title, tag and design-comparison tools; Thumblore bundles nine browser-only tools; TubeToolbelt adds a thumbnail tester and title analyser. We built the same toolkit around a real editor.

Open tool →How it works
Four steps, the same flow ytthumbtool uses for its downloader — paste, preview, download — extended to designing your own.
Pick a tool
Start from a template in the Maker, or paste a video link into the Downloader.
Make it yours
Add your photo, 3–5 big words, and a background that contrasts with your face or subject.
Test it small
Run it through Preview and A/B Compare. If it doesn't read at 168 px wide, it won't earn the click.
Download free
Export PNG or JPG at 1280 × 720, or upscaled 3840 × 2160. No watermark, ever.
The sizes, honestly
YouTube Help now recommends uploading custom thumbnails at 3840 × 2160 (2160 × 3840 for Shorts), minimum 640 px wide, JPG or PNG, under 50 MB on desktop / 2 MB on mobile. But the largest thumbnail YouTube serves back for downloading is 1280 × 720 — so any site promising a “4K thumbnail download” is mislabelling 1280 × 720. We design at 1280 × 720, offer a 3840 × 2160 export, and label every download with its real dimensions.
| File | Real size | When it exists |
|---|---|---|
maxresdefault.jpg | 1280 × 720 | Only when the uploader supplied a high-resolution custom thumbnail |
sddefault.jpg | 640 × 480 | Most videos |
hqdefault.jpg | 480 × 360 | Nearly every video |
mqdefault.jpg | 320 × 180 | Nearly every video |
default.jpg | 120 × 90 | Every video |
Why creators use free tool sites like this one
No account, no catch
The big template editors are excellent — but their free tiers have catches: Canva's background remover is paid-plans-only, Snappa allows 3 downloads a month, and Fotor/Kapwing gate or watermark downloads. Here the whole toolkit is free with no sign-up and no cap.
Private by design
Everything runs in your browser. Images you upload are never sent to a server, and links you paste into the Downloader are parsed on your device. There is nothing to store, so there is nothing to leak.
Built for the click
Templates follow the rules that actually drive click-through rate: 3–5 words maximum, text readable at phone size, one clear subject, and contrast between subject and background. The Preview tool proves it before you publish.
Use images responsibly
Thumbnail Maker
Design at the exact size YouTube displays. Pick a template or start blank, add your photo and bold text, then download — free, with no watermark. Everything happens in your browser; your images are never uploaded.

Tip: drag any element to move it. Keep thumbnails to 3–5 words — if it can't be read at the small preview in the Preview tool, viewers scrolling on phones won't read it either. YouTube recommends uploading at up to 3840 × 2160, JPG or PNG, under 50 MB (desktop) — use the 4K export for uploads; 1280 × 720 is ideal for quick sharing.

How to make a thumbnail that earns the click
1. One subject. A face with a clear emotion, or one object, large. Two competing subjects halve the impact of both. 2. Three to five words. Your title carries the detail; the thumbnail text only has to create curiosity. 3. Contrast everywhere. Light text on a dark background (or the reverse), an outline around every word, and a background colour that differs from your subject. 4. Design for the smallest size. Most views start on a phone, where your thumbnail may be 168 px wide. Test it in the Preview tool before publishing. 5. Keep the bottom-right clear — YouTube overlays the video duration there.
Frequently asked — Maker
What size should my thumbnail be?
Design at 1280 × 720 (16:9). YouTube Help recommends uploading custom thumbnails at 3840 × 2160 where possible, minimum 640 px wide, JPG or PNG — that's why the Maker offers a 3840 × 2160 export of your 1280 × 720 design.
Is there really no watermark or limit?
Correct. Downloads are unlimited and unmarked. The site is supported by advertising on its content pages (once enabled), not by gating your exports.
Are my uploaded photos sent anywhere?
No. The editor runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Closing the tab removes everything unless you use “Save project in this browser”.
YouTube Thumbnail Downloader
Paste a YouTube link — watch page, youtu.be short link, Shorts, live or embed URL — or a bare 11-character video ID. You'll get every thumbnail size YouTube serves for that video, labelled with its real dimensions.
The video ID is parsed in your browser. We never store the links you paste, and no video data is downloaded — only the public thumbnail images YouTube itself serves.
Which thumbnail sizes are available?
Every YouTube video has up to five thumbnail files. The largest, maxresdefault.jpg (1280 × 720), only exists when the uploader supplied a high-resolution custom thumbnail — for older or auto-generated thumbnails it simply isn't there, and this tool hides the card instead of showing you YouTube's grey 120 × 90 placeholder. No downloader can give you a “4K thumbnail”: 1280 × 720 is the largest file YouTube serves. Sites that promise more are upscaling and mislabelling it.
Common uses
Studying what works in your niche before designing your own · rebuilding a thumbnail you lost · moodboards and channel audits · embedding a thumbnail image in a blog post or newsletter (with credit and, for commercial use, the owner's permission).
Is downloading a thumbnail the same as downloading a video?
No. This tool only retrieves the still image files YouTube's image CDN serves publicly. It does not download, rip or convert any video or audio.
Can I reuse a thumbnail I download?
Thumbnails are the uploader's copyrighted work. Reference, research, commentary and criticism are the normal fair uses; republishing someone else's thumbnail as your own or using it commercially needs their permission. See the legal-use guide.
Why is the HD size missing for my video?
The uploader never supplied a 1280 × 720 custom thumbnail, so YouTube never generated the file. The 480 × 360 HQ version is the largest that exists. Our guide “Why maxresdefault is missing” explains it fully.
Thumbnail Preview & Tester
Upload a thumbnail (or send one from the Maker) and see it the way viewers will: home feed, search results, suggested sidebar and mobile — in light and dark. If the text doesn't read at the small sizes, it won't earn the click.
What to check
Readability at 168 px: your main words should still be legible in the mobile mock. The badge corner: nothing important under the duration. One-glance meaning: a stranger should guess the video's topic in under a second. Dark mode: dark thumbnails can disappear into YouTube's dark theme — add a light outline or border if yours does.
Thumbnail A/B Compare
Upload 2–4 versions of a thumbnail and compare them side by side at the sizes viewers actually see. (This is a visual comparison tool — true live A/B testing happens inside your own channel with YouTube's Test & Compare feature.)
How to judge the winner
Shrink first, judge second: the version that stays readable and recognisable at 168 px almost always wins in the real feed. Prefer the design with fewer words, the bigger face or subject, and the stronger contrast. If two versions tie, change one variable only — colour or text, not both — and compare again.
YouTube Title Checker
Check a title before you publish: length, how it truncates on each surface, ALL-CAPS ratio, and whether your main keyword sits where eyes land first.
Title rules that hold up
Front-load the interesting part — search results truncate around 50–60 characters and mobile shows even less. Keep the whole title under 100 characters (YouTube's limit). Use ALL CAPS for at most a word or two; a full-caps title reads as shouting and often underperforms. Put the keyword early, but write for the human first: the title's job is the click, the keyword's job is helping YouTube understand the topic.
Tag Generator & Description Builder
🏷️ Tag & Hashtag Ideas Generator
Formula-based starting ideas from your topic — broad, specific, long-tail and question forms. Edit them to match your actual video; tags help YouTube understand your topic, they don't guarantee ranking.
0 / 500 characters ·
📝 Description Builder
Builds a structured description with a hook, chapters, links and hashtags, and validates your chapters (must start at 0:00, at least 3 chapters, at least 10 seconds apart).
0 / 5,000 characters ·
About tags, honestly
YouTube itself says tags play a minimal role in discovery for most videos (they mainly help with common misspellings). Spend five minutes here, not fifty: use the generator for a sensible list, then put your real effort into the thumbnail and title, which is where clicks are won.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is ThumbForge really free?
Yes. Every tool — maker, downloader, preview, compare, title checker, tags and description builder — is free with no account, no watermark and no download limit. The site is supported by advertising on its pages.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs in your web browser on phone, tablet or desktop.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The editor and preview tools process images locally in your browser. The downloader only requests the public thumbnail files from YouTube's image CDN. We never store links you paste or images you open.
What is the correct YouTube thumbnail size?
Design at 1280 × 720 (16:9). YouTube Help recommends uploading custom thumbnails at 3840 × 2160 (2160 × 3840 for Shorts), minimum 640 px wide, JPG or PNG, under 50 MB on desktop / 2 MB on mobile. Custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account, and Shorts thumbnails are added in YouTube Studio on a computer.
Why can't I download a 4K thumbnail?
Because YouTube doesn't serve one. The largest thumbnail file YouTube returns for any video is 1280 × 720 (maxresdefault). Anything labelled “4K download” is an upscale of that file.
Can I reuse a thumbnail I download here?
Only with the owner's permission, or within a genuine fair-use purpose such as commentary, criticism, research or reporting. Republishing another creator's thumbnail as your own is copyright infringement. See the legal-use guide.
Is ThumbForge affiliated with YouTube?
No. ThumbForge is an independent tool site and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by YouTube or Google.
Why did the HD thumbnail come back missing?
The video's uploader never provided a 1280 × 720 custom thumbnail, so YouTube never created the file. The 480 × 360 version is the largest available for that video.
About ThumbForge
ThumbForge is a free toolkit for YouTube creators, built and run by Malik Mohsin. It exists because the tools creators need most — making a thumbnail, grabbing a reference thumbnail, checking how a design reads at phone size, tightening a title — were scattered across sites that demand accounts, cap free downloads at three a month, or stamp a watermark on your work.
Here the promise is simple and it's the same one the best small tool sites in this niche make: no account, no watermark, no download limit, everything in your browser.
What we offer
A canvas thumbnail editor with niche templates and a 3840 × 2160 export; a thumbnail downloader that labels every size honestly; a preview & tester with light/dark feed mockups; an A/B visual comparator; a title checker; a tag-ideas generator; a description builder with chapter validation; and a dated library of original guides.
How we work
Tools run client-side wherever possible, so your images and links stay on your device. Guides are written for this site, dated, and re-checked when YouTube changes its specifications — as it did when the recommended upload size moved to 3840 × 2160.
Legal & ethics
We only surface images YouTube itself serves publicly. Thumbnails remain the property of their creators; we explain fair use honestly and never encourage republishing someone else's work as your own. ThumbForge is not affiliated with YouTube or Google.

The short version
ThumbForge's tools run in your browser. We do not operate a server that receives your images, your project files, or the YouTube links you paste. We do not require accounts and we do not sell personal data.
What is processed, and where
Editor, Preview, Compare: images you open are processed locally with your browser's Canvas API and never leave your device. “Save project” stores your design in your own browser's local storage, on your device only; clearing your browser data deletes it. Downloader: the video ID is extracted locally; your browser then requests the thumbnail image directly from YouTube's image CDN (img.youtube.com). Contact: the contact button opens your own email app; we receive only the email you choose to send.
